03.12.12: Dreaming is free…

When I met you in the restaurant
You could tell I was no debutante
You asked me what’s my pleasure
A movie or a measure?
I’ll have a cup of tea and tell you of my dreaming
Dreaming is free….

And that’s exactly what I did a lot of this past weekend…dream. I stayed home most of the weekend and relaxed and did some errands here and there and lavished myself with beautiful fragrances and basically, Rachel time. I thought quite a bit about life; past experiences and how they affect me now….

And my friends, my beautiful lovely friends who called me to check up on me…thank you.

I did go out Friday night with my coworkers to bid a good one goodbye, JP, we’ll miss you! (And I’ll miss you’re Vulcan blood drink aka green juice you’d bring me!)…fun times.  Basically, I ended up in a cab home deciding that the rest of the weekend was going to be low-key and not to let anything or anyone get in the way of that lovely choice.

I got home and ended up working on the song I had been trying to find within myself for awhile now. When I went back to take a peek at what I had written; I actually enjoyed it. I was able to express what I has been trying to say and felt relieved…..

Now I have to strum a tune to go with it.

No wonder Charles Bukowski drank so much, it’s surprising how easy it is to explain your emotions when you have had a bit of that lovely liquid they call “truth juice”.

Staying home most of the weekend entitled me to set up a work out routine: dancing. Yes, dancing is the best workout for me as I hate to admit it but I am not someone who enjoys going to the gym. Though, if I do end up at one, I work out continuously for 3 hours and then don’t return to the gym for another 6 months, even if I had ended up hanging out with the trainers and making appointments.

Alas, at home this weekend and in my bedroom; I twisted, twirled, spun, waltzed and basically danced myself into a frenzy for hours on end. At the end of it: I was relaxed and decided to make myself this delicious lunch to re-energize myself with:

Spicy Miso Soup with extra Seaweed & Tension relieving tea...

Saturday night, my dear friend Carol rang me up on the telephone and mentioned that she had picked up a bunch of amazing vintage clothes for me. Some of them were hers previously and some just bought at Black Bear, our new favorite vintage shop in Park Slope. She came over that evening and watched as I excitedly tried on a few of the new items: not wanting to take off the 40’s vintage black sheer dress she had given me. After she left, I waltzed in it and twirled myself around the room feeling like I was living in the movie: Sunset Boulevard. Thank you Carol! 🙂 (My new favorite is the Givenchy blue  mod dress)!

Robyn invited me over to her place, as she is also one of my lovely and close friends for a cheer up: but I knew I needed my alone time. (love to you and Jessy!)

I wrote some more: chatted a bit online to some friends I haven’t seen and thought a lot about my future….

Cherish these nights, they do not occur to often.

On Sunday, I awoke to a beautiful Sunny day and got dressed and ready for some shopping in Cobble Hill. As I knew I was going to be going to my brother’s later that day with the kitten that he and his wife had adopted from Jacquelyn and I.

Of course, as I arrive at Borough Hall I end up running right to Perelandra (as it just so happens to bemy favorite health food store in the city) and grab a Grape Chia Kombucha for lunch as I really did not have much of an appetite. After hanging at Perelandra for a while and impulsively picking up a few extra beauty supplies to indulge myself in later I walked out with my head held high and wandered down a few blocks to American apparel and bought a purse. Ah, retail therapy.. sometimes it is just needed to take your mind off of things.

I never met him, I’ll never forget him….

While taking in one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and giggling at texts I was receiving from Diana, my “Sissy”, I nearly bumped right into my favorite twin brothers, Dan (The Ethical Man) & his twin brother, Matt. Funny enough, I had emailed Matt’s girlfriend just an hour earlier to ask her to have dinner with me soon. Fate works in mysterious ways because right at that moment, I really did need my friends and there they were; right in front of me, laughing because there I was: giggling and wandering aimlessly down the street not even looking up…until I saw their bright smiles. We all hung out for a bit on Court Street, taking in the sun and speaking about their new project:cllctv.com (Collective) and their rock band: Here.

This was indeed turning into another beautiful day. I went up to my brothers and we hung out with the new kitten into the night, and sat down to a cozy Thai dinner. It;s become a tradition for us to spend time together again and I appreciate every moment of it.

After leaving I made a stop at Trader Joe’s and bought some groceries and ran over to Barnes & Noble to check out some new books. I love Barnes & Noble, and somehow just the smell of books up-lifts me and I usually walk out of there with another 2 books in hand; this time I was good, but I think I will be stopping there later on today, as well as The Strand.

Today as in Monday:

Dream dream, even for a little while
Dream dream, filling up an idle hour
Fade away, radiate….

I didn’t sleep very well the night before and actually ended up waking up at 5 am, but when my alarm awoke me with its “80s”-like alarm, and it said 6:20, I pulled myself up and out from under my soft sheets and into the loo to get ready for the day.

I chose a simple vintage pencil velvet skirt and a J-Crew shirt that my friend S has given me as a gift. (Hugs lady!)

I sit by and watch the river flow
I sit by and watch the traffic go
Imagine something of your very own
Something you can have and hold…

Snapping this as I walked on over to my favorite lunchtime treat: NY Dosa Man, an all vegan dosa cart located near on the south side of Washington Square Park . I swear he knows exactly what to send my way! Food always makes me a happy lady.

Though I guess I am looking pretty serious in this picture: I also take my lunch seriously.

I’d build a road in gold just to have some dreaming
Dreaming is free
Dreaming
Dreaming is free
Dreaming
Dreaming is free….

And that is just what I will do: continue to dream….into reality.

I bid you farewell till tomorrow’s entry…xo.

02.03.12: I want candy….All the time.

Not really candy but tons of chocolate. And guess what? Now is the PERFECT time for chocolate: It’s almost Valentine’s day. This time of year reminds of sweet aromas of vanilla and rose petals flow in the wind and hearts are worn on sleeves..

I just get more passionate about my sweet tooth.

Candy on the beach, there’s nothing better
But I like candy when it’s wrapped in a sweater
Some day soon I’ll make you mine,
Then I’ll have candy all the time

I absolutely adore vintage valentines cards.

And I am preparing myself to have a very vintage valentine’s day. It’s the perfect excuse to buy great goodies at vegan bake sales like Whalentines which will donate all profits to Sea Shepherd which will be at Moo Shoes in New York City on Sunday, February 12th.

Moo Shoes sells all vegan footwear store that is located in the Lower East Side and is somewhere I tend to frequent whether it is to shop, go to an event(like bake sales or book readings!) and or just see some friends of mine who work there and pet the cats.  I always head over there to marvel at the beautiful new vegan shoe fashions out there whether I can afford it at the time or not but this Whalentines: I will be buying myself quite a bit of goodies and am likely going to share.

What is a vintage valentines, you ask? Well, considering I usually wear vintage and most likely it seems as if I might be flying solo: I will be dressing myself fashionably and for a night on the town & possibly even taking myself out on a date. Maybe even purchase some lovely lingerie from my friends line in Dublin: HoneyTrap Boudoir which reminds me of the classic sexy calendar girl retro style I always like to go for when wearing my lace little nighties. (And yes, I have many of those).

I am kind of addicted to vintage lingerie: the feel and satin that usually just drapes over my curves perfectly. We all admire this and I for one will speak on it. Lingerie is a spectacular fashion and sometimes I do not understand why most women now a day’s don’t spend time wearing it.  Its classic, it’s beauty under your clothes and pleasing when you lay between your sheets: alone or with a significant other. This is in fact an instant confidence booster to know that you look as good as you feel.

Where will I go? A classic movie at the IFC? Buying myself a lovely vintage valentine? Wait, let me stop for a moment, I LOVE vintage valentine’s. They were creative, gentle and now just pure precious: always innocent and sweet like candy, because I want candy(chocolate).
The candy of choice will be my chocolate of choice:

Occupy my heart with Fine & Raw Chocolate

Only choosing the best for myself: Fine & Raw.  I have a thing for aphrodisiacs and this exactly what it is: Raw chocolate. Ever want to make a grown woman like myself smile? I’ll give you a hint: this is it. All vegan and loving, no animal products in it what-so-ever.

Also you can purchase Sweet & Sara’s Heart Marshmallows! Delicious and smooth, I actually would love this as a treat, indeed!….

Sweet & Sara Marshmallow! All vegan.

I will dance over to one of my favorite restaurants and enjoy a candlelight dinner. So honestly, whether you are going out on a date for valentines and or taking yourself out solo or out with your friends, I think you should enjoy a classic vintage valentine’s day full of kisses full yourself or kisses for someone else. Wear a lovely dress, buy some delicious chocolate….and get your candy, lots of candy. I know I will fe3el and look beautiful where ever or however I end up on this day because to me it’s just like any other day of the year except you see a lot more red & hearts and people seem to make a point to be just a bit more sentimental. Though, I am sentimental every day, being single or with my friends or even with someone I care for: Valentines day is not just one day a year but everyday. Oh yes, while I smell of sweet vanilla.

So it’s not entirely valentines day yet and I will most likely write about it in the future and maybe my plans will change; maybe not. I already had some sweet dark chocolate covered cashews this morning: always a nice treat & a lovely nibble to wake up to.   Aphrodisiacs are a daily need.

Speaking of Aphrodisiacs: Music is my number one aphrodisiac as it eases it’s way into my heart and soul with it’s lyrics and riffs. I will be listening to some nice jazz and then some classic rock if need be. Just to set the perfect tone to my night…

Today’s outfit:

Mod about sparkling; vintage dress bought at AUH2O. Flower Pom Pom headband (my roommates!) & vintage mod pokodot bracelet.

SO obviously, this morning I was thinking of the English punk band: Bow Wow Wow, no I am not referring to the R&B/Rap artist kid of the 90s. But the genius punk band that we all have grown up listening to. The video for “I want Candy ” came out in 1981 & is still often played on the radio. Is this because it’s upbeat? Hell yes. I love that no matter what: you want to shake your bum to it. (And I’ll even do it in my lingerie! ha!) So today this song inspired my 80s “mod” outfit. Isn’t it marvelous how music can often inspire your outfits for the day? Or is that just me?

Last night I went shopping at AuH2o last night and again came out with quite a few items: The dress I wore today, some plastic colorful bracelets & a mod ring, school girl gray skirt & a striped blue long tunic with a peter pan collar (very mod).

So this year, I want chocolate…

And you can pick some chocolate and other goodies up at The Whalentines Bake Sale for Sea Shepherd at Moo Shoes (78 Orchard Street) on February 12, 2012 from 12:30 to 5:30 PM.

Dance with me on valentine’s or I’ll just be dancing to myself.

I want candy, I want candy
I want candy, I want candy…

02.2.12: Space Oddity…

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you….

Ah, David Bowie. Iconic, Beautiful, Glam…Gorgeous and the iconic androgynous man. (And if you know me, that’s a plus!) Oh, and in some cases magical (Labyrinth). Ok, I will stop describing him as I am sure you all are well aware of these thing and more.

I grew up knowing of and hearing Bowie through my father’s friends and not so much at home but his beauty, voice and magic hypnotized me. I’d hear Space Oddity as a child and imagine myself living through this descriptive song. Ziggy Stardust? You know it. Two of my favorite movies has actually had Bowie starring it it: Can you guess them? I’ll give you a hint…

Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Liftoff
This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare….

Labyrinth: An epic film during my life which I have seemed to possibly watch over 100 times and continue doing so. I remember one time waking up in what I think might have been Massachusetts at 3 a.m. as a young girl (maybe 5 years old) and not knowing where I am but at someones house and far from home after traveling in a van all night during the summer months and there was Labyrinth, on the Telly as several people slept beside me.  I fell for this man’s voice right there, slightly worried by his character, The Goblin King, but not able to fall asleep again: I watched the whole film  and didn’t even question who may have turned it on. It was fate and I was able to handle it.

The Man who Fell to Earth is a movie & book that I discovered several years ago realizing that Bowie was in it and it became on the top of my must watch list. Every time I watch it I notice something different and an oddity, the book: deep and intriguing. Recently, I was able to see it at The Film Forum in the West Village. Seeing it in the cinema and not on the telly? Magical! (Though I had already watched it several times at my flat!)

If you have not read or heard of  The Man who fell to earth, you must go read the book and watch the movie..NOW.  It seems to affect people in different ways and some times, you don’t even know what is happening. It’s simply brilliant.

And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

What is going on currently, you ask? What shirt do I wear? Well you all know what shirt I was wearing yesterday. After work I ran to pick up my beloved guitar and then I ran over to an important meeting for a group that I am currently involved with: Food Justice Affinity Group. We are mostly made up of vegans(and vegetarians) who work with Occupy Wall Street. We have quite a few ideas in doing out reach to the outer borough neighborhoods of New York City, both vegan outreach and Occupy Wall Street outreach. We want to show change and make change. If you did catch me posting our live stream link, great! If not you can watch what we are up to here & part II is here.

And in honor of Space Oddity: This shirt is amazing, right? This happens to be my friend Nick from work who has a brilliant style. He knows how to carry a cardigan with a t-shirt like no other and dresses mod occasionally! (Definitely hip!).  When he passed me with this shirt on, I instantly took this photo because I already knew the topic in which I was writing my daily post on.  Nick tends to be one of my  Mod Pod Daily “photographers”, as well.

Space Cat!

As we are already in this theme, I actually did a somewhat Mod Military look.

Mod Military

Military Mod: Charles Military Tank upcycled by AuH2O, Black granite vintage necklace & gold necklace, swapped vintage wrist bracelet & Black vintage schoolgirl skirt & printed tights from the swap.

Comfy sweater from clothing swap.

AUH2O, where I happen to pick up the upcycled shirt and & I have had a long history. AuH2O (Kate’s last name is Goldwater)  is a second-hand and vintage clothing store located in the East Village in which a good friend of mine, Kate Goldwater had opened quite a number of years ago. I wondered in one day and basically never left: becoming friends with Kate and modeling her designs even to this day. Her and her partner are very picky about what they decide to sell in the shop and no matter what when I go in there I always walk out with a bag of items at GREAT prices. Kate also does numerous fashion shows and fashionable items that reflect her (as well as my own) activist choices. Kate is not only an inspiration but a delight.  But seriously, I LOVE Charles military tank. 🙂

Check out her shop at:

84 East 7th Street  in New York City and her website at: www.auh2oshop.com/

Also, this may be off topic but I have recently came across Moroccan Oil: It is AMAZING. My hair feels like a dream and shines like the sun. Check it out and you shall to be amazed!

Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you….
“Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do….

Personally, I would love to be floating far above the moon looking down at the earth below and realizing we are all space cats..Odd? I think not. Word of the day? Magical.  Because that’s what space cats are.

Can you hear me Major Tom?

Space Mod Hop

P.S. WAR is OVER. You can wear a military inspired outfit but please do not support wars of any kind. Though I am sure Charles was a nice guy. Peace.

01.20.12: Touch your lips with a magic kiss, And you’ll be a bluebird too, And you’ll know what love can do….

Paul McCartney (when he was in Wings) singing Bluebird was the first song this morning when I woke up and turned on my I-tunes and hit shuffle that I listened to.  Hearing him sing such a song that got me moving was what inspired me to wear this semi casual 70’s-80’s outfit, and of course it has to be primarily the color blue:

70's Mod Sweater.

I'm a Bluebird...Acrylic knit sweater bought at Stache. Mod Print.

Being inspired this morning by Paul is a dream come true since I truly didn’t sleep all to well last night. I usually find myself waking up and checking the time to see how much LONGER I can actually sleep and maybe jotting down a few words into one of my journals and passing out again.

Paul is an extraordinary person to me. I have met him previously while living in Dublin and not that I didn’t already like him because believe me, I did..he actually became more of someone I can say when I hear what he has to say, see his face and or read up on his new activist moves: he brings light to my soul. His concerts are powerful (Well, he is a Beatle!)…and he is vegetarian. He represents PETA, and speaks highly on Animal Rights and Human Rights activism. He had started the campaign of Meat Free Mondays which involves asking people who do eat meat to at least try to cut out meat for just one day a week: Mondays. and wrote a song for it.

Meat Free Monday, it’s a fun day……

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian” – Paul McCartney.

All alone on a desert island
We’re living in the trees,
And we’re flying in the breeze….

Desert? Not at all, it is actually quite cold here in NYC right now but this gives me a chance to show off my retro jackets. I have a slight obsession with numerous coats and I never seem to wear them all but I decided on wearing this one today as it is comfy, warm and fits well with jeans: & I love my go-go hat:

Go-go bluebird

Late at night when the wind is still
I’ll come flying through your door….

Tonight I will be having a slumber party with my good friend Diana and am so very excited about that! This means typically being girly; painting each others nails, talking about boys and watching movies that will probably melt our hearts and even more likely: dancing to music and jumping around in our pajamas. There will be pics: I guarantee this.  Even more so: We will probably make sure to say “No Boys allowed” or “Boys drool, girls rule”  This is one girl that the fun just keeps on giving. I will be wearing a mod nightgown *if it’s not to cold* and or my usual Animal rights shirt with sweat pants.  She is inspiring and I look forward to hanging all night with her! She is the owner of Elements Wellness Boutique which is located in Westfield, NJ.

Next step: to buy a nice pair of flannel pajamas, maybe I will stop by at Odd Twin in Brooklyn tonight and check out if they have any. I really enjoy going to sleep looking nice because in the morning while I walk up to the mirror drowsy and half asleep (really, like a zombie), I smile as I knowingly entered the world of dreams: looking my best. 🙂

Tomorrow: I will be holding a Protest against INTERMIX because they have recently started to sell Fur (UK!) nationwide and I am the campaigner for the NYC Branch of this Anti-Fur Campaign.  Please try to attend this:

NEW YORK INTERMIX DEMO:

Soho Store & Location on Prince Street (98 Prince St ) , 1:00PM to 2:30PM

Saturday, January 21st.

Please bring signs and cameras.  Facebook Link: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/290192981029811/

P.S.  Thank you to Jacquelyn, my wonderful roommate for waking me up with Gluten Free Chocolate cake she had baked last night for her Vegan Catering Company, Vegan Bun Buns….mmmm!!!!

Till next time…
