03.02.12:Cheer up, sleepy Jean……

Oh I could hide ‘neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings
The six o’clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise, wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shaving razor’s cold and it stings….

And I'm a Believer...

Wednesday morning came and I was still laying in bed as the alarm went off at 10 a.m. That’s right, I did not go to work on Wednesday.

I turned on iTunes and decided I’d listen to some Monkees, especially “Daydream Believer” because, well…I have certain songs I listen to every morning and this just so happens to be one of them. And, listening to Davy Jones voice first thing in the morning makes it so that the rest of the day turns out to be a delight. Just the day before I had posted on twitter how much I adore Davy Jones, my fellow Monkees fans and Davy fans cheered in on that twitter post and we all giggled in unison. I really do not live in modern times per say, do I? I just seem to fit into the 60s rather than …the present. And like my music taste & clothes, I take joy in my love for relics….

Suddenly around noon, my phone started going off with text messages and as I opened the first one from my father, it simply said “Davy jones died”. All I could reply was: “nonono” the next couple of texts from friends and even my brother followed.

When I was 3 years old, they had a reunion tour and my father had brought me to the show where I sat in the front row and threw a beach ball up on stage and Davy had kicked it back and this kept happening throughout the show where then each of the Monkees would kick the ball back to me. I know this was one of those profound moments in my life because even at that age, I loved them and knew all the songs though I can barely understand what was being sang about. (Love, girls) They just made me the coolest 3-4 year old ever! (rolling my eyes.)

I would watch “The Monkees” TV show whenever it was on and yes, I do own the first full season now. I want the other season (ahem birthday! heh). One time I even woke up at 3 a.m. just to catch Davy doing a guest appearance.

I may be crazy, but a good crazy….:)

Cheer up, sleepy Jean, oh what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?

That night, my friend Leanne (Sunshine!) had a party to open her new boutique in Williamsburg for her darling clothing line, Vaute Couture. I didn’t make it because I chose to take it easy and relax but I heard the party was fantastic.

Check out her store at:

234 Grand Street, Williamsburg

(L to Bedford, G to Lorimer)

The night turned out to be special for me….

Daydream believer.

Thursday.

I awoke to another beautiful morning and watched as a Seagull flew over the East River. This was indeed a lovely way to start the day….

I got back to work and caught up on emails & projects and realized I had a hair appointment that night with Stacy, of StylesOnB. I LOVE Stacy and have been going to her for about 4 1/2 years.  Not only is she the ONLY person I’d ever trust with my hair but also a friend of mine who I always look forward to seeing. She knows my unique and dramatic style and we decided to go with a “baby fringe” ala 1961.

60s m'inspire ...

After hanging at StylesOnB, I took a little leisurely walk to Kate’s Joint on Ave B, which happens to be one of my main hot spots for a quick dinner or even brunch with my mates. They now serve many gluten-free alternatives which makes this lady right here, very pleased.

I ordered the Vegan Mac & Cheese (Gluten-free!) and sautéed spinach and hung out as long as I can before running over to Lula’s to meet Kristy for a sweet treat. Taking in some East Village memories as I passed the garden on East 6th and Ave B. Since I grew up in this part of town, there are always memories as I pass a certain corner or building, a street sign even.

Arriving at Lula’s Sweet Apothecary and taking in the tunes of the 20s as I entered.  I marveled at all my choices and tasted three flavors: Peanut Butter Fudge, Maple Almond & Pistachio. I ended up dancing a little with the couple that was there eating a sundae as I waited patiently for Kristy to arrive. Patience in Lula’s is a hard task to follow, by the way.

Obviously, I ended up ordering a Virgil’s Root Beer float that I couldn’t finish and ended up handing over to Kristy to savor the last bit..mm mm.

We strolled on down to Club Ella where I was about to see a friend’s show and received an important text message…..

Good luck dad and feel better.

I love you…

Friday.

60s m’inspire …Mod Pop of Yellow! Striped vintage shirt: Auh2O Thriftique, Skirt: Beacon’s Closet.

I wasn’t able to sleep very well last night but I did wake up to some funny texts from my sissy in crime, Diana. ❤ And Daydream believer came on my iPod on the way to work…my heart skipped.

So far so good…

Tomorrow & Sunday are the days of the 2nd year of The Vegetarian Food Festival. This year I made sure to get V.I.P. tickets in advance as last year there just so happened to be a 3 hour wait in line and I didn’t end up getting in. I am so excited to sample a bunch of different new vegan foods as well as hear some of my friends speak on panels and of course, bump into friends as I manage to navigate through the crowds of people anxious to grab treats!

If you haven’t bought your ticket in advance, it will be $5.00 at the door but if I were you: buy a ticket now to join in on the fun.

The event will be taking place from: 10AM to 5PM (Saturday & Sunday) at:

The Metropolitan Pavillion

125 West 18th Street (Between 6th & 7th), New York City

Happy Friday & Cheers to making it an enjoyable one. Happy March….

You once thought of me as a white knight on a steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good time starts and ends
With a dollar one to spend
But how much baby do we really need?….

02.23.12: Belles! Belles! Belles! The beautiful twisting in the snow….

Belles! Belles! Belles!
Un jour mon pre me dit : fiston, j’te vois sortir le soir
A ton ge, il y a des choses qu’un garon doit savoir
Les filles, tu sais, mfie-toi, c’est pas c’que tu crois….

One of my new favorite French songs thanks to my mod-la-chat Kate! Merci! I put the YouTube video on as I got ready for work and it instantly cheered my morning up just by how retro and fun this video is. I tossed clothes around, figured out my makeup for the day and sang in French to myself as I ended up choosing this comfy 70s sweater dress that I bought at Odd Twin in Brooklyn, another one of my favorite vintage stops.

Late 60s/early 70s sweater dress. Vintage Sea Foam Green/blue necklace. Antique Aries Bracelet. The beautiful twisting in the snow...

Elles sont toutes
Belles, belles, belles comme le jour
Belles, belles, belles comme l’amour
Elles te rendront fou de joie
Fou de douleur, mais crois-moi plus fou
D’elles, d’elles, d’elles de jour en jour ….

Kate and I went to see our friend Dan play a relaxed show at Kim’s video last night and then went on to eating dinner at Pukk with her friend (and my new friend!) Brett. Pukk is great because it’s a vegan/vegetarian Thai place that is well, set within a reasonable price range. Being as it may and how Kate and I always emphasize the ideas of travel and exploration and of course, the 60s era…I went home thinking and…

Last night as I lay in my bed at about 11 at night I began to fantasize about getting away for a weekend somewhere soon.

I know that around my birthday plenty of my close friends are planning on going up to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary with me because I go up there annually during the weekend before or after.  My birthday isn’t for another 2 months and I can be a bit impatient. I need to get away before that to refresh my spirit….

I am breaking, in two really on behalf of my need for freedom from the restraints of the cities limits and the fact that I am pretty damn good at keeping busy, it’s actually what I do best but then there are those time’s where I want to run…into the sweet embrace of not knowing what may come next!

So I end up watching video’s  like these that have girls clad in 60s swing coats and dresses. Let’s sway…

(I enjoy these videos all the time!)

I love the philosophy about this song: it’s just so freaking 60s and fun.  Ah, J’adore Claude Francois!

Ah, I need some sort of refresher. I need to wake up feeling the morning’s sweet dew on my skin and breathe in the fresh air of nature. I am craving to hear the soothing sound of a cricket chirp…that would be just lovely. How about the sweet sound of birds chirping (isn’t it spring yet?) as I slowly open my eyes from a sweet slumber? That would surely set me off into a spiral of delight.

So,…where should I go? What should I see? Any ideas?

I want to get lost and twirl in the forest dressed in mod and let fate take me into it’s arms…

Elles sont toutes
Belles, belles, belles comme le jour
Belles, belles, belles comme l’amour
Elles te rendront fou de joie
Fou de douleur, mais crois-moi plus fou
D’elles, d’elles, d’elles de jour en jour

But first I am guaranteeing a luxurious taste of sweet vegan ice cream from Lula’s Sweet Apothecary (anyone up to join me?) on this beautiful day in New York City and a nice leisurely walk to Organic Avenue for Lunch because for today will be treated like my first and yesterday was the last day of my life…..as I take in the sweet taste of spring in the air.

And I will end this post on:

““I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.” – Audrey Hepburn.

So, let me laugh…swing and sway to my 60s French music for today, Je suis les chat. (I am the cat).

And today, I just read this great article entitled “Mod Math” from my friend, Dan Mim’s website, Cllctv.  Check it out…:)

Meow.

P.S.  I love this picture of my father that I have never seen before, a true flower child!

❤ the 60s!

02.06.12: Another pleasant valley Sunday…

Your local rock group down the street

Is trying hard to learn this song
To serenade the weekend squire
Just came out to mow his lawn

Can you believe the weekend is over already? This just means I have to start off this post with a little itty bitty run down of the pleasant weekend I had:

Friday.

After work Kate, Nick & I had decided we all need a glass of wine: or a couple of glasses of wine and we decided that we would stroll on over to one of my favorite wine bars in the city, The Room.  I love The Room because they play some good tunes and the atmosphere is calm and with the low lighting, edgy. We decided we would head up to the Upper East Side and on to V-note  which is a vegan wine bar uptown that serves a full menu of entrees.

To Nick’s dismay, we decide to change outfits at Kate’s:

Kate's shirt 🙂 Mod Pod Borrows!

We end up at V-note where I order the “Faux Chick’n Salad” (Gluten Free) and when it came out I enjoyed every last nibble of it, pleasant it was indeed.

Back at Kate’s we play our favorite YouTube videos, dance to our favorite songs and nearly fall asleep from all the excitement of the day at work we all had and the wine that we had indulged in.

I don't think we liked this phone call 😉

The next day I ended up having brunch at Kate’s Joint, but not before at home getting this picture snapped of our beloved foster cat, Tricia and I:

Another pleasant valley sunday
Charcoal burnin everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care…..

After Kate’s joint, I started to crave ice cream (this is not a surprise, really.) and ended up heading over there with Jacquelyn but not before getting my daily photos taken:

Vegan Combat boots;Vintage velvet jacket;vintage school girl skirt from Stache; Vintage David Bowie tshirt & hat from Beacons closet.

After Lula’s Sweet Apothecary we decide to go shopping a bit and buy a few earrings and stop at one of my favorite shops for beauty needs: Sustainable NYC.

Banana & Peanut Brittle Vegan Ice Cream with coconut whip cream & a cherry..:)

Sustainable NYC is the best Eco-friendly store in the city and carries anything from beauty needs to gifts to household needs and clothing. The Cafe located in the back of the shop is Ciao for Now and carries many vegan foods items and I can always guarantee on a delicious treat while I shop for hours in Sustainable. I tend to hang out here a bit because many of my friends usually work at this shop and it’s just, chill. Picking up a lip gloss and playing with everything had to end as I had to carry on with my night out.Later on, I ended up at the Brooklyn museum where I listened to music and my friend and I made it a point to lose ourselves in art. I love museums just for this reason as I have been known to turn off my phone and lead myself through museums for hours on end. Life is art and I shall bathe in it! 🙂

So, let’s skip the ever pleasant sunday…

And I will let us stroll on over to current times and my outfit for today:

Vintage striped dress. Red Bow.

Today, the sun is shining and I am feeling at peace. Though, I am sure you guessed the word for today? It seems as though I pick a word daily and stick with it. Also, you must notice and realize that The Monkees happen to be one of my favorite bands as the first time I saw them live in concert I was 3 years old and in the front row tossing a beach ball on stage and having Peter and Davey & Micky kick the ball back to me throughout the show. I later met Micky (or more recently) at an event and explained this story to him in full detail to his surprise, which then his reply was “that must have been…quite a long time ago.”  Just another memory that will never be forgotten: beach balls & The Monkees and Day Dream Believer…this is my life. 🙂

Stripes.

A style in which I will never deny being placed into my closet, I have to wear stripes just based on the fact that two of my fashion icons are Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, two people who apparently helped make stripes fashionable in the 60’s. If it’s nautical and or Striped: I very well may have it in my closet or can’t deny the need to buy it. I’d paint my room in stripes if I could (not really) but now I just think I may refurbish a piece of furniture in a nautical theme ..and this is how I get inspired.

Edie ❤

I am positive you have seen me wearing the exact outfit that she is numerous times over. Have you ever thought of why we look up to certain people to inspire our own style and fashion? I do all the time & might have a similar taste of the 60s but I mix it with my own personal essence of now. Mod for modern. Inspire me….

Ciao and wait patiently until:

Another pleasant valley sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Another pleasant valley sunday
Here in status symbol land
Another pleasant valley sunday….

The word for today is pleasant.

1.26.12: The chef prepares a special menu. For your delight, oh my. Tonight you fly, so high up in the Vanilla Sky…..

Open your eyes…

Open your eyes….

I didn’t exactly wake up with a lady’s voice blaring to me from an alarm clock telling me to open my eyes, but I am a lucid dreamer and the movie, Vanilla Sky actually affects me. It’s definitely in one of my top 10 films to see and it’s a clear hint because Tom Cruise’s character actually has a large framed movie poster from another favorite of mine:  “Jules et Jim” (A black and white french film that was filmed in 1962)…

1962 Film Poster

I opened my eyes and saw that today IS a new day, a new outfit. Daily routine just as yesterday, picking out my outfit with Vegan drinks tonight in mind I settled on:

A vintage dress I bought 11 years ago at Cheap Jacks in NYC from the 70's. Disco, a bit but still has a mod cut. Vintage belt: Beacons Closet. Vintage bow Headband while wearing my hair naturally wavy for Diana.

Your life is fine
It’s sweet and sour
Unbearable great
You’ve got to learn
every hour, you must appreciate.

Obviously, I feel like shining tonight in this outfit as everything from the Burgundy velvet dress to the headband has some sort of sparkle. That’s because in my Vanilla dream: I sparkle.

I believe in lucid dreaming, as when I am there: I actually realize I am dreaming and am able to explore this world as much I like and sometimes, I wish I can stay there. I can hike to the tallest of mountains or visit friends in other countries or have some hot romance. Of course, I also realize I must return to reality and wake up aware of what I just was able to encounter while I sleep….

This is your time,
This is your day.
You’ve got it all.
Don’t blow it…away.

Sometimes keeping a dream journal (something I have to get back into routine) I would wake up and jot down several bits and pieces and analyze them later, just out of habit and good fun. Do I believe in dream definitions? Not really…our minds just work in amazing and beautiful ways. intriguing I must say because we shall never know, Freud believed in lucid dreaming and I know I live it once in a while.

Snail or fish,
Ballon or dolphin
See your silver shine.

Last night turned out to be a pretty relaxing evening with my mom as we wandered the East Village and over to Kate’s joint, a local veg hang out & then on over to Lula’s where I ordered my sundae:

Mint Chocolate Chip & Chocolate Fudge Swirl Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce and coconut whip cream with a cherry! nomnomnom

I savored every last moment of eating that sundae and made jokes about drowning into a huge vat of Mint ice cream…mmm. I bumped into my friend Melissa and my mom took a few photos of me with her lovely little dog…I’ll post those when I get them. We wandered a bit longer after that  went home where I relaxed the rest of the night. My roommate surprised me with a Hello Kitty Robe that I had been eyeing (love!)  and I couldn’t wait to be able to wear it around the house.  I’ll soon take pictures of me in that for a blog entry in the future on sleep wear.

Today is a Vanilla Sky ..you know that scene where he wakes up in the morning and runs to Times Square? It’s a bit cloudy out, well that’s where my mind is right now. Just a little bit cloudy. I may like chocolate but I love living vanilla…a soft comforted life. Sweet, and lasting….

UPDATE:  I was recently interviewed by PETA for their Volunteer Spotlight and the interview came out today:  Click down there:

Peta Volunteer Spotlight

I shall bid you goodbye till my next post and bid you to dream sweetly tonight till you must…Open your eyes and enjoy reality. (Just as I am!)

Life can't get any better than a candid shot. 🙂

The chef prepares a special menu
for your delight, oh my.
Tonight you fly, so high up
in the Vanilla Sky…
in the vanilla,uh, in the vanilla,oh, in the vanilla sky.
in the vanilla,ah, in the vanilla,uh, in the vanilla sky.
Mmmmm..in the Vanilla Sky….

And now I want vanilla ice cream.
