Camera Shy? (Part 1)

Recently I have had the most amazing chance to do two photo-shoots with two different photographers!

Both of them having very different styles:

Photos by Kyria Abrahams, 2012:

Here are a few (ok a bunch of my favorites):

Shooting with Kyria was simply amazing; easy to work with and we really were coming up with a bunch of concepts together. I am so glad that I had come across her work after she had done a beautiful photo-shoot with my friend Polina. Kyria is able to bring out your hidden personality; your sexuality and or your sensitivity. Her camera is her poetry and she simply: projects it with ease.

As you can probably tell we decided to use  a vintage inspiration (oh, how surprising!) mixed with my love of Vespa’s, Jean Shrimpton and Plaid 60s suits. We shot the photos in my house and found it to be the perfect location for future shoots.

The inspiration: Jean Shrimpton.

Other inspirations: Audrey Hepburn, Raquel Welch, Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy (of course).

A friend I know I will have forever, and an inspiration for having such a soul for the art she adores.
Check out Kyria’s blog, books and photos at:

& a special thank you to Hamlet’s Vintage who lent a lot of the wardrobe for this swinging shoot:

01.30.12: Dancing in the street….

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer’s here and the is right
For dancing in the street….

Deadly Mod ❤

Ah! I just love The Kinks and that song and the fact that it gets me all giddy and I end up, can you guess what I end up doing? Dancing in the street.

I just so happen to be one of those “people”, you know the ones who always look chipper and dance like no one is watching, sometimes even sing like no one can hear them? Yes, I am one of those people. I have an iPod, you know this, so why not use it to my advantage?

They’ll be dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
In New York City
All we need is music, sweet music
There’ll be music everywhere
There’ll be records playing,
Dancin’ and swayin’
Dancing in the street…

Yesterday: Vintage Japanese red shirt, School girl skirt & Corduroy hat.

(I didn’t snap a photo of me yesterday so I am using a photo I took with the same outfit at Stache.)

And thus yesterday on my way to Williamsburg, I did just that! Swaying and singing to myself as I rode the train to meet a good friend of mine and head over to Foodswings in Brooklyn where they cater to the needs of vegans(and non vegans!) wanting some good ol’ comfort food.  I ordered my gluten free BBQ veggie chick’n drumsticks & metal fries which happen to be drizzled with vegan cheez, bleu cheez & hot sauce…mmm mm…just my thing, well once in a while because after it usually leaves me in a coma and I have to literally drag myself up from the seat and ride the train home feeling a bit dazed. Though I feel this way every time after indulging, it’s a need of mine to do so, for I am impulsive and love to indulge! mm….

So lets talk about the present day. This morning I got on the train carrying my guitar through rush hour: always a tedious thing and I get quite worried I will bump into something and it will be destroyed! I know this won’t happen, but you know, I try to take care of my things as best as I can. 🙂 This beloved guitar of mine has become sentimental because my friend Jen gave it to me as a gift as it was hers previously. It’s in great shape and one of my goals is to basically be able to play guitar pretty well as I enjoy writing lyrics to songs and strumming but I want to be able to really make my own music.

Basically from birth, I wanted to sing like Janis Joplin, write like Patti Smith and be able to capture the hearts of so many with my spoken word: expressing myself and having others understand what I am feeling as I share my passion. I may not be able to do that but I will be able to at least enjoy the confidence I have of the arts I enjoy: and play a sinful riff with lyrics that go along with it. This is what happens in the mind of a toddler who grew up with art in her veins.

I am mod about this purple & blue thrift dress I picked up that instantly cheers me up. (It's forever 21 but bought it thrift.)

Well, doesn’t matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So every guy grab a girl
Every night around the world…

I may be a dreamer but I am not the only one…

Go Meat Free today for Meat Free Monday!

01.20.12: Touch your lips with a magic kiss, And you’ll be a bluebird too, And you’ll know what love can do….

Paul McCartney (when he was in Wings) singing Bluebird was the first song this morning when I woke up and turned on my I-tunes and hit shuffle that I listened to.  Hearing him sing such a song that got me moving was what inspired me to wear this semi casual 70’s-80’s outfit, and of course it has to be primarily the color blue:

70's Mod Sweater.

I'm a Bluebird...Acrylic knit sweater bought at Stache. Mod Print.

Being inspired this morning by Paul is a dream come true since I truly didn’t sleep all to well last night. I usually find myself waking up and checking the time to see how much LONGER I can actually sleep and maybe jotting down a few words into one of my journals and passing out again.

Paul is an extraordinary person to me. I have met him previously while living in Dublin and not that I didn’t already like him because believe me, I did..he actually became more of someone I can say when I hear what he has to say, see his face and or read up on his new activist moves: he brings light to my soul. His concerts are powerful (Well, he is a Beatle!)…and he is vegetarian. He represents PETA, and speaks highly on Animal Rights and Human Rights activism. He had started the campaign of Meat Free Mondays which involves asking people who do eat meat to at least try to cut out meat for just one day a week: Mondays. and wrote a song for it.

Meat Free Monday, it’s a fun day……

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian” – Paul McCartney.

All alone on a desert island
We’re living in the trees,
And we’re flying in the breeze….

Desert? Not at all, it is actually quite cold here in NYC right now but this gives me a chance to show off my retro jackets. I have a slight obsession with numerous coats and I never seem to wear them all but I decided on wearing this one today as it is comfy, warm and fits well with jeans: & I love my go-go hat:

Go-go bluebird

Late at night when the wind is still
I’ll come flying through your door….

Tonight I will be having a slumber party with my good friend Diana and am so very excited about that! This means typically being girly; painting each others nails, talking about boys and watching movies that will probably melt our hearts and even more likely: dancing to music and jumping around in our pajamas. There will be pics: I guarantee this.  Even more so: We will probably make sure to say “No Boys allowed” or “Boys drool, girls rule”  This is one girl that the fun just keeps on giving. I will be wearing a mod nightgown *if it’s not to cold* and or my usual Animal rights shirt with sweat pants.  She is inspiring and I look forward to hanging all night with her! She is the owner of Elements Wellness Boutique which is located in Westfield, NJ.

Next step: to buy a nice pair of flannel pajamas, maybe I will stop by at Odd Twin in Brooklyn tonight and check out if they have any. I really enjoy going to sleep looking nice because in the morning while I walk up to the mirror drowsy and half asleep (really, like a zombie), I smile as I knowingly entered the world of dreams: looking my best. 🙂

Tomorrow: I will be holding a Protest against INTERMIX because they have recently started to sell Fur (UK!) nationwide and I am the campaigner for the NYC Branch of this Anti-Fur Campaign.  Please try to attend this:

NEW YORK INTERMIX DEMO:

Soho Store & Location on Prince Street (98 Prince St ) , 1:00PM to 2:30PM

Saturday, January 21st.

Please bring signs and cameras.  Facebook Link: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/290192981029811/

P.S.  Thank you to Jacquelyn, my wonderful roommate for waking me up with Gluten Free Chocolate cake she had baked last night for her Vegan Catering Company, Vegan Bun Buns….mmmm!!!!

Till next time…

01.19.12: There beneath the blue suburban skies I sit, and meanwhile back……

It was bright blue skies as my friend from work, Kate and I strolled to grab lunch at Organic Avenue in the West Village..

We were speaking enthusiastically of our office party at The Standard that was going to be happening that night when we passed this mural and knowing how much I adore Kate’s new mod inspired coat: had to snap this photo.

Mod Street:

Shimmy, shimmy all night long now,
Shimmy, shimmy the whole day through now,
Shimmy, shimmy the whole night too,
I can shimmy, yeah, whoa! Come on! Whoa!….

My office party was held on top of The Standard Hotel in the West Village of Manhattan, a beautiful and pleasant venue overlooking Manhattan’s Skyline.

Inspiring View!

Now, you all want to see my dress, don’t you? You know the one I was ecstatic about- my dream dress? Let me start off by mentioning that it is a beautiful chiffon dress from the 50s that my friend had given to me from her own personal collection….I knew this was the one:

Lucy in the sky with diamonds...

My tiara is a sentimental piece of adorned jewelery…

I noticed that several of my other friends also went mod for this occasion or just looked magnificent…

Robyn is always beautiful and she is a mommy to be! 🙂

My friend Nick showed up looking quite dapper and mod!

Rocking it Mod

And Kate…did not have any buttons but she did have on an amazing 80s inspired dress that suited her perfectly.

The night was a great success as we all celebrated our 10th Anniversary and danced, spun and partied into the night.  We looked out at the view, thinking of where our lives are right now and all came to the conclusion that we are happy right then, with our friends on top of the cities lights.

I felt like a whimsical fairy twirling away on the dance floor…

Till next time.

01.18.12: Mod isn’t only a style, but a lifestyle. Welcome to my life.

Hello, and welcome to the first few sentences of my new blog: Mod Pod Daily.

So how did I come up with this blog? Well, I have always been inspired by Mod fashion and the era’s of the 1950s, 60s and 70s (and sometimes 80s) I honestly do not believe that modern fashion (unless inspired by these era’s) are well thought out, proper and or very sexy. They use cheap fabrics in modern times that are made usually by children in China, India and must I list all the other countries? Needless to say; I will NOT support sweat shops. I honestly try not to shop at H&M, Forever 21 and or Gap, Old Navy…etc.

I try to only shop in vintage and thrift stores and find that I seek out fabrics that are unique.

I grew up as a child idealizing the 60s for Audrey Hepburn, Edie Sedgwick, Twiggy & Nico.  Daydreamed of having been able to coincide and live with Andy Warhol at the factory and dance to my favorite bands of these era’s, with true artists.  I would throw my body in sync to: The Beatles, The Monkees, Jefferson Airplane (hey guys!) & Jimi Hendrix… just to name a few( I can go on and on..) Dress up in vintage right after I’d watch Bewitched and imagine me as a witch, twitching her nose as a 60s housewife in suburbia.

You ask WHY? Why would a young girl growing up in the 80s want to not be present with the fashion of the 80s and 90s. Well, I grew up with a hippie(Yippie) Activist as my father.

My Father, Aron Kay- The Pieman and I at Zucotti Park

My Father, The Pieman and I at Zucotti Park

Intriguing, eh?

He would throw tunics on me and Tye-dye’s and bring me to parties where indeed, it was like living the 60s. He knew (and knows) quite a few icons and I grew up either meeting, knowing these people and or hearing the stories.  He is known for his Pie-Throwing days and now more currently, his Occupy Wall Street activist.

My fathers web page and history

…so check him out. I will speak more on this in the future;

My mother is a loom knitter, this means that she likes to weave and has her own personal style of colors, prints and the likes always inspired as well, by the 60s. Check out my mom’s craft blog.

How did I come up with this? Well, I have been thinking of starting a blog for a while now and I haven’t found the time and I will try to keep this up to date: Daily. Mod Pod Daily.

I went to a party this past MLK weekend and one of my friends brought it up as she had recently started her very own daily blog and she inspired me to start right then and there. At the party, I had another friend take a snapshot of me. This was Saturday the 14th of January:

First Picture of this blog! Taken at my friend's home on game night.

and thus, began the promotion. The next day I had my friend who was sleeping over(yes, we had a slumber party!) take some snapshots of me:

Mod Pod Daily: Sunday the 15th of January.

Sun Burst Dress...Spring in the snow.

This day was actually one of the best days of my life because I was able to help out at a historical event for MLK at the Riverside Church that very inspiring people spoke at and shared their music and poetry. Patti Smith, Russell Simmons and numerous others stood up for what was right and what they believed in. This just marked another chapter in my life as the words of Patti Smith inspired me to always stand up for myself, be myself and ALWAYS care for others with my activism.

Yes, I am an activist. Animal Rights and Veganism are my core, but I also work on Human Rights as well as anything else I believe in.

SO, I gave you a little secret didn’t I? This is a VEGAN Blog. This means that everything I wear in this blog and daily are vegan(No Animal Products) and this means: No Leather, Wool, Silk, Cashmere and FUR. (Fur hags beware, you wont find it here.)

I went to a Beatles Sing- Along on Sunday at Union Hall in Brooklyn (where I am from) and was called up to stage for being one of the 3 best dressed in a 70s inspired outfit. This was pretty funny because I really just dress this way daily and went up with a smile on my face toting around a small paisley 60s suitcase full of vintage clothes that I had purchased at my friends vintage shop earlier in the day:

Check out Stache! She holds quite a few sales and I usually walk out with either bags full or in this case, a suitcase full of new and daily inspiring fashions.

They shot this: 60s Acrylic Knit Cap, Broche from Carol and sentimental, NO FUR PIN and my new Suit case.

Unfortunately, I did not win the contest as the guy won for his Faux 60s button down and his 1969 plastic glasses. I did get to mention to them about this blog and now, I am finally starting it.

Here are just a few more shots from yesterday and today. Tonight will be my job’s 10 year anniversary and I picked out the perfect dress from Stache(her private collection) and I will be posting pictures.

Thank you for stopping by to my first post and see you again tomorrow!
