03.14.12: Mellow Yellow….

I’m just mad about Saffron
Saffron’s mad about me
I’m just mad about Saffron
She’s just mad about me…..

It’s been quite sunny the past two days and I’ve been absorbing as much of it as I can. This morning I awoke again, an hour early. This is due to Daylight Savings time I figure and it has completely thrown off my “self” alarm clock. I lay in bed until my alarm actually goes off at 6:20 a.m., half dreaming. I’m caught in R.E.M..

As soon as my alarm went off I jumped out of bed, put on my iTunes for some “morning tunes” and heard “Mellow Yellow” by Donovan…my eyes fixated on my favorite mustard yellow skirt, a black sheer shirt Carol gave me as a gift by the designer: Agnes B. and pokadot tights. Simple yet I am “mod” for this outfit.

They call me mellow yellow
They call me mellow yellow
They call me mellow yellow..

I sang along to the melodic lyrics and looked forward to the start of another enjoyable sunny day.

While wandering over to Souen for lunch (a macrobiotic restaurant I might frequent about 3 times a week), I just closed my eyes, took a deep breath in and reveled in the beauty of spring.

At Souen: Enjoying a carrot, apple & ginger fresh pressed juice.

Having about 20 minutes of my lunch hour left, T & I decided to take a stroll down what we thought might be “The most British of blocks” in our vicinity to snap some photos for this here, blog. My friends are brilliant because they happen to put up with me & a photo (or several photos) a day!

I’m just mad about Fourteen
Fourteen’s mad about me
I’m just mad about Fourteen
She’s just mad about me…

My  dear friend Diana was quite correct in a statement she had made: my new “Beatles” jacket has become a staple. of my wardrobe;

Hat: Army Navy Store: $5.00, Skirt: J-Crew Thrift, Agnes B. shirt:gift & Military jacket: vintage, Army Navy Store.

Born high forever to fly
Wind velocity nil
Wanna high forever to fly
If you want your cup our fill…

Tonight I am going to be heading on over to Williamsburg and maybe even delight myself in some Foodswings.  I should fit right in with this outfit, yes?

I know what you are thinking right now: My dinner is going to be quite the opposite of what I had for lunch but life is all about balance, isn’t it? I happen to think of this often, as well as my health. I have known and met far to many people who just don’t do not know how to balance fresh and healthy foods to well, the more unhealthy but enjoyable ones. I crave chocolate (as you all now!) and if I had mostly greens and brown rice that day, I will most likely end up with a bar of chocolate and or some vegan ice cream by the end of the day. Don’t lose insight into what makes you happy: for me? Foodswings usually does and a glass of wine and let’s not forget to mention tea & chocolate.

I am feeling pretty mellow today despite my third consecutive morning at Starbucks where the Barista handed me over another free Soy Peppermint Misto, oh gee: addiction…here I come. And yet, I still enjoy tea more.

I can have it 10 times a day, that’s pleasure in a cup.

Oh so yellow, oh so mellow….

tonight.

1.26.12: The chef prepares a special menu. For your delight, oh my. Tonight you fly, so high up in the Vanilla Sky…..

Open your eyes…

Open your eyes….

I didn’t exactly wake up with a lady’s voice blaring to me from an alarm clock telling me to open my eyes, but I am a lucid dreamer and the movie, Vanilla Sky actually affects me. It’s definitely in one of my top 10 films to see and it’s a clear hint because Tom Cruise’s character actually has a large framed movie poster from another favorite of mine:  “Jules et Jim” (A black and white french film that was filmed in 1962)…

1962 Film Poster

I opened my eyes and saw that today IS a new day, a new outfit. Daily routine just as yesterday, picking out my outfit with Vegan drinks tonight in mind I settled on:

A vintage dress I bought 11 years ago at Cheap Jacks in NYC from the 70's. Disco, a bit but still has a mod cut. Vintage belt: Beacons Closet. Vintage bow Headband while wearing my hair naturally wavy for Diana.

Your life is fine
It’s sweet and sour
Unbearable great
You’ve got to learn
every hour, you must appreciate.

Obviously, I feel like shining tonight in this outfit as everything from the Burgundy velvet dress to the headband has some sort of sparkle. That’s because in my Vanilla dream: I sparkle.

I believe in lucid dreaming, as when I am there: I actually realize I am dreaming and am able to explore this world as much I like and sometimes, I wish I can stay there. I can hike to the tallest of mountains or visit friends in other countries or have some hot romance. Of course, I also realize I must return to reality and wake up aware of what I just was able to encounter while I sleep….

This is your time,
This is your day.
You’ve got it all.
Don’t blow it…away.

Sometimes keeping a dream journal (something I have to get back into routine) I would wake up and jot down several bits and pieces and analyze them later, just out of habit and good fun. Do I believe in dream definitions? Not really…our minds just work in amazing and beautiful ways. intriguing I must say because we shall never know, Freud believed in lucid dreaming and I know I live it once in a while.

Snail or fish,
Ballon or dolphin
See your silver shine.

Last night turned out to be a pretty relaxing evening with my mom as we wandered the East Village and over to Kate’s joint, a local veg hang out & then on over to Lula’s where I ordered my sundae:

Mint Chocolate Chip & Chocolate Fudge Swirl Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce and coconut whip cream with a cherry! nomnomnom

I savored every last moment of eating that sundae and made jokes about drowning into a huge vat of Mint ice cream…mmm. I bumped into my friend Melissa and my mom took a few photos of me with her lovely little dog…I’ll post those when I get them. We wandered a bit longer after that  went home where I relaxed the rest of the night. My roommate surprised me with a Hello Kitty Robe that I had been eyeing (love!)  and I couldn’t wait to be able to wear it around the house.  I’ll soon take pictures of me in that for a blog entry in the future on sleep wear.

Today is a Vanilla Sky ..you know that scene where he wakes up in the morning and runs to Times Square? It’s a bit cloudy out, well that’s where my mind is right now. Just a little bit cloudy. I may like chocolate but I love living vanilla…a soft comforted life. Sweet, and lasting….

UPDATE:  I was recently interviewed by PETA for their Volunteer Spotlight and the interview came out today:  Click down there:

Peta Volunteer Spotlight

I shall bid you goodbye till my next post and bid you to dream sweetly tonight till you must…Open your eyes and enjoy reality. (Just as I am!)

Life can't get any better than a candid shot. 🙂

The chef prepares a special menu
for your delight, oh my.
Tonight you fly, so high up
in the Vanilla Sky…
in the vanilla,uh, in the vanilla,oh, in the vanilla sky.
in the vanilla,ah, in the vanilla,uh, in the vanilla sky.
Mmmmm..in the Vanilla Sky….

And now I want vanilla ice cream.

01.18.12: Mod isn’t only a style, but a lifestyle. Welcome to my life.

Hello, and welcome to the first few sentences of my new blog: Mod Pod Daily.

So how did I come up with this blog? Well, I have always been inspired by Mod fashion and the era’s of the 1950s, 60s and 70s (and sometimes 80s) I honestly do not believe that modern fashion (unless inspired by these era’s) are well thought out, proper and or very sexy. They use cheap fabrics in modern times that are made usually by children in China, India and must I list all the other countries? Needless to say; I will NOT support sweat shops. I honestly try not to shop at H&M, Forever 21 and or Gap, Old Navy…etc.

I try to only shop in vintage and thrift stores and find that I seek out fabrics that are unique.

I grew up as a child idealizing the 60s for Audrey Hepburn, Edie Sedgwick, Twiggy & Nico.  Daydreamed of having been able to coincide and live with Andy Warhol at the factory and dance to my favorite bands of these era’s, with true artists.  I would throw my body in sync to: The Beatles, The Monkees, Jefferson Airplane (hey guys!) & Jimi Hendrix… just to name a few( I can go on and on..) Dress up in vintage right after I’d watch Bewitched and imagine me as a witch, twitching her nose as a 60s housewife in suburbia.

You ask WHY? Why would a young girl growing up in the 80s want to not be present with the fashion of the 80s and 90s. Well, I grew up with a hippie(Yippie) Activist as my father.

My Father, Aron Kay- The Pieman and I at Zucotti Park

My Father, The Pieman and I at Zucotti Park

Intriguing, eh?

He would throw tunics on me and Tye-dye’s and bring me to parties where indeed, it was like living the 60s. He knew (and knows) quite a few icons and I grew up either meeting, knowing these people and or hearing the stories.  He is known for his Pie-Throwing days and now more currently, his Occupy Wall Street activist.

My fathers web page and history

…so check him out. I will speak more on this in the future;

My mother is a loom knitter, this means that she likes to weave and has her own personal style of colors, prints and the likes always inspired as well, by the 60s. Check out my mom’s craft blog.

How did I come up with this? Well, I have been thinking of starting a blog for a while now and I haven’t found the time and I will try to keep this up to date: Daily. Mod Pod Daily.

I went to a party this past MLK weekend and one of my friends brought it up as she had recently started her very own daily blog and she inspired me to start right then and there. At the party, I had another friend take a snapshot of me. This was Saturday the 14th of January:

First Picture of this blog! Taken at my friend's home on game night.

and thus, began the promotion. The next day I had my friend who was sleeping over(yes, we had a slumber party!) take some snapshots of me:

Mod Pod Daily: Sunday the 15th of January.

Sun Burst Dress...Spring in the snow.

This day was actually one of the best days of my life because I was able to help out at a historical event for MLK at the Riverside Church that very inspiring people spoke at and shared their music and poetry. Patti Smith, Russell Simmons and numerous others stood up for what was right and what they believed in. This just marked another chapter in my life as the words of Patti Smith inspired me to always stand up for myself, be myself and ALWAYS care for others with my activism.

Yes, I am an activist. Animal Rights and Veganism are my core, but I also work on Human Rights as well as anything else I believe in.

SO, I gave you a little secret didn’t I? This is a VEGAN Blog. This means that everything I wear in this blog and daily are vegan(No Animal Products) and this means: No Leather, Wool, Silk, Cashmere and FUR. (Fur hags beware, you wont find it here.)

I went to a Beatles Sing- Along on Sunday at Union Hall in Brooklyn (where I am from) and was called up to stage for being one of the 3 best dressed in a 70s inspired outfit. This was pretty funny because I really just dress this way daily and went up with a smile on my face toting around a small paisley 60s suitcase full of vintage clothes that I had purchased at my friends vintage shop earlier in the day:

Check out Stache! She holds quite a few sales and I usually walk out with either bags full or in this case, a suitcase full of new and daily inspiring fashions.

They shot this: 60s Acrylic Knit Cap, Broche from Carol and sentimental, NO FUR PIN and my new Suit case.

Unfortunately, I did not win the contest as the guy won for his Faux 60s button down and his 1969 plastic glasses. I did get to mention to them about this blog and now, I am finally starting it.

Here are just a few more shots from yesterday and today. Tonight will be my job’s 10 year anniversary and I picked out the perfect dress from Stache(her private collection) and I will be posting pictures.

Thank you for stopping by to my first post and see you again tomorrow!
