03.13.12: And I’m free to be whatever I…

I’m free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I’ll sing the blues if I want……

Last night as in Monday Night…

How free was I when I walked out of work with my friend T? We giggled insanely as we decided we’d wander across town to the East Village and stop by Viva Herbal for some Pizza but as we were walking on the way and crossing West 8th Street, I noticed in the window of Uncle Sam’s Army Navy Outfitters (my favorite Army surplus store) that they were having a 50% off sale. Before you can blink, I was running across the street with T trailing fast behind me. We walked in, my eyes wide with temptation as I started grabbing vintage navy shirts and the store owner escorted us around the street pulling out things he knew I would adore: Vintage Bell Bottoms (I am running back to get!), vintage navy shirts like Anna Karina wore in Une Femme est Une Femme. I grabbed a navy hat in each color: Blue and Yellow and ran quickly to the dressing room. As I entered the dressing room, I turned around to look at T for a moment before my eyes narrowed in on  a stunning Marine’s jacket in my size with every button in place I quickly snatched it up and began trying on my goods:

Vintage yellow sailor hat & sailor tunic vintage high waist bell bottoms...oh yes.

I really loved the tunic but decided on trying my next outfit:

Sky Blue button down Marine shirt. Love it...

I danced around the store picking up a few more items and decided on getting the jacket, as well. T saw how much I wanted the jacket and decided to offer to put $10.00 towards it. Later, when we went to visit my father: he saw how much I loved the jacket, proclaimed it a “Beatles Jacket” and decided to put more towards it as one of my many Birthday gifts from him (Thanks dad!).

As we were exiting the store: they asked me if they could snap a photo of me for their blog to put up on their website. The photo will be up soon…

We walked down the block and T had me stop so that another picture can be snapped.

Je suis la femme Sailor!

We strolled in the nice weathered evening to Viva Herbal and grabbed 3 Gluten Free Chick Pea crust pizza slices to split before heading over to visit my smiling father.

After hanging out with him for a bit and several jokes later, we decided to head on over to one of my favorite bars in the city: Otto’s Shrunken Head. We ordered our favorite drinks there and had a seat while playing Irish Trivia (and yes, I knew most of the answers!). Sipping on our Mai Tai’s and a few photos later, we decided to go in the back and listen to some live music before we each headed home for the night. We tried to sit as quietly as we can as we listened to singer songwriters take the stage and I tried not to become emotional and let the words seep into my heart….

I’m free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it’s wrong or right it’s alright….

In deep thought....

We got up to leave and the musicians on stage stopped their show to say goodnight to us as we were exiting the back room and complimented my hat.

I thanked them and we walked to the train and each went home as it was a “school night”, you know.

Today. Ahoy Mate!

And yet again, I woke up at 5 a.m. startled from the vivid dream I was having. Remembering every detail: I jotted it down quickly and went about my morning routine and made a note to incorporate my new “Beatles” jacket into my chosen outfit of the day.

I ran to the subway and made it a “Blondie” morning as I sang along to her songs streaming from my iPod.  As I entered the subway, again I noticed people staring me up and down because of my very 60s sailor cap. In this situation, I just smile confidently and remind myself that I am fashion forward.

Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long’s it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It don’t cost much…..

I arrived to my office building and ran right into Starbucks for an early morning pick me up…a Grande Soy peppermint misto (Thanks Ashley and Virginia for the addiction!) and the second day in a row: the barista gave me my favored flavored coffee drink for: FREE. (As well as complimented my outfit again..) I thanked him, mentioned I’d be in tomorrow for the same thing and ran upstairs to start my day.

Of course, I checked Facebook at some point and I want to thank Dan for posting the video of the opening theme song to “That Girl”, the TV Show that ran on American’s tube’s from 1966 to 1971. This definitely cheered me up by saying that’s who I reminded him of! 🙂

At Lunch, T and I decided to go looking for  Lennon Cap (I would really adore  a Pretty Green Lennon Cap like this one that Liam Gallagher is wearing in this photo):

Having no such luck, we headed over to NY Dosa man and snapped photo of my outfit for the day as we waited patiently for our mouth-watering food to be prepared…

Vintage Nautical Shirt, skinny jeans and vegan Melissa shoes (bought at Beacons closet for $14.00 from $$95.00!)

I’m free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I’ll sing the blues if I want

Here in my mind
You know you might find
Something that you
You thought you once knew
But now it’s all gone
And you know it’s no fun
And I know it’s no fun
Yeah I know it’s no fun

Can you tell what my theme for this beautiful Spring day was? Nautical. This is most likely because my dream the night before featured the ocean and sailing, a beautiful adventure nonetheless. But let’s return to my slight clothing addiction; you do know it’s my addiction, right? I have a large amount of vintage items that are decorated with anchors, boats and stripes in reds, navy & cobalt blue. In fact, I had to buy a new nail polish this past weekend just because it was my favorite color, cobalt blue (other than red and mustard yellow).

These are a few of my favorite things…..and my birthday hint list. 😉

Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it’s alright
Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it’s alright….

Let’s go sailing….and be free to do whatever we want.

03.02.12:Cheer up, sleepy Jean……

Oh I could hide ‘neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings
The six o’clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise, wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shaving razor’s cold and it stings….

And I'm a Believer...

Wednesday morning came and I was still laying in bed as the alarm went off at 10 a.m. That’s right, I did not go to work on Wednesday.

I turned on iTunes and decided I’d listen to some Monkees, especially “Daydream Believer” because, well…I have certain songs I listen to every morning and this just so happens to be one of them. And, listening to Davy Jones voice first thing in the morning makes it so that the rest of the day turns out to be a delight. Just the day before I had posted on twitter how much I adore Davy Jones, my fellow Monkees fans and Davy fans cheered in on that twitter post and we all giggled in unison. I really do not live in modern times per say, do I? I just seem to fit into the 60s rather than …the present. And like my music taste & clothes, I take joy in my love for relics….

Suddenly around noon, my phone started going off with text messages and as I opened the first one from my father, it simply said “Davy jones died”. All I could reply was: “nonono” the next couple of texts from friends and even my brother followed.

When I was 3 years old, they had a reunion tour and my father had brought me to the show where I sat in the front row and threw a beach ball up on stage and Davy had kicked it back and this kept happening throughout the show where then each of the Monkees would kick the ball back to me. I know this was one of those profound moments in my life because even at that age, I loved them and knew all the songs though I can barely understand what was being sang about. (Love, girls) They just made me the coolest 3-4 year old ever! (rolling my eyes.)

I would watch “The Monkees” TV show whenever it was on and yes, I do own the first full season now. I want the other season (ahem birthday! heh). One time I even woke up at 3 a.m. just to catch Davy doing a guest appearance.

I may be crazy, but a good crazy….:)

Cheer up, sleepy Jean, oh what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?

That night, my friend Leanne (Sunshine!) had a party to open her new boutique in Williamsburg for her darling clothing line, Vaute Couture. I didn’t make it because I chose to take it easy and relax but I heard the party was fantastic.

Check out her store at:

234 Grand Street, Williamsburg

(L to Bedford, G to Lorimer)

The night turned out to be special for me….

Daydream believer.

Thursday.

I awoke to another beautiful morning and watched as a Seagull flew over the East River. This was indeed a lovely way to start the day….

I got back to work and caught up on emails & projects and realized I had a hair appointment that night with Stacy, of StylesOnB. I LOVE Stacy and have been going to her for about 4 1/2 years.  Not only is she the ONLY person I’d ever trust with my hair but also a friend of mine who I always look forward to seeing. She knows my unique and dramatic style and we decided to go with a “baby fringe” ala 1961.

60s m'inspire ...

After hanging at StylesOnB, I took a little leisurely walk to Kate’s Joint on Ave B, which happens to be one of my main hot spots for a quick dinner or even brunch with my mates. They now serve many gluten-free alternatives which makes this lady right here, very pleased.

I ordered the Vegan Mac & Cheese (Gluten-free!) and sautéed spinach and hung out as long as I can before running over to Lula’s to meet Kristy for a sweet treat. Taking in some East Village memories as I passed the garden on East 6th and Ave B. Since I grew up in this part of town, there are always memories as I pass a certain corner or building, a street sign even.

Arriving at Lula’s Sweet Apothecary and taking in the tunes of the 20s as I entered.  I marveled at all my choices and tasted three flavors: Peanut Butter Fudge, Maple Almond & Pistachio. I ended up dancing a little with the couple that was there eating a sundae as I waited patiently for Kristy to arrive. Patience in Lula’s is a hard task to follow, by the way.

Obviously, I ended up ordering a Virgil’s Root Beer float that I couldn’t finish and ended up handing over to Kristy to savor the last bit..mm mm.

We strolled on down to Club Ella where I was about to see a friend’s show and received an important text message…..

Good luck dad and feel better.

I love you…

Friday.

60s m’inspire …Mod Pop of Yellow! Striped vintage shirt: Auh2O Thriftique, Skirt: Beacon’s Closet.

I wasn’t able to sleep very well last night but I did wake up to some funny texts from my sissy in crime, Diana. ❤ And Daydream believer came on my iPod on the way to work…my heart skipped.

So far so good…

Tomorrow & Sunday are the days of the 2nd year of The Vegetarian Food Festival. This year I made sure to get V.I.P. tickets in advance as last year there just so happened to be a 3 hour wait in line and I didn’t end up getting in. I am so excited to sample a bunch of different new vegan foods as well as hear some of my friends speak on panels and of course, bump into friends as I manage to navigate through the crowds of people anxious to grab treats!

If you haven’t bought your ticket in advance, it will be $5.00 at the door but if I were you: buy a ticket now to join in on the fun.

The event will be taking place from: 10AM to 5PM (Saturday & Sunday) at:

The Metropolitan Pavillion

125 West 18th Street (Between 6th & 7th), New York City

Happy Friday & Cheers to making it an enjoyable one. Happy March….

You once thought of me as a white knight on a steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good time starts and ends
With a dollar one to spend
But how much baby do we really need?….

02.06.12: Another pleasant valley Sunday…

Your local rock group down the street

Is trying hard to learn this song
To serenade the weekend squire
Just came out to mow his lawn

Can you believe the weekend is over already? This just means I have to start off this post with a little itty bitty run down of the pleasant weekend I had:

Friday.

After work Kate, Nick & I had decided we all need a glass of wine: or a couple of glasses of wine and we decided that we would stroll on over to one of my favorite wine bars in the city, The Room.  I love The Room because they play some good tunes and the atmosphere is calm and with the low lighting, edgy. We decided we would head up to the Upper East Side and on to V-note  which is a vegan wine bar uptown that serves a full menu of entrees.

To Nick’s dismay, we decide to change outfits at Kate’s:

Kate's shirt 🙂 Mod Pod Borrows!

We end up at V-note where I order the “Faux Chick’n Salad” (Gluten Free) and when it came out I enjoyed every last nibble of it, pleasant it was indeed.

Back at Kate’s we play our favorite YouTube videos, dance to our favorite songs and nearly fall asleep from all the excitement of the day at work we all had and the wine that we had indulged in.

I don't think we liked this phone call 😉

The next day I ended up having brunch at Kate’s Joint, but not before at home getting this picture snapped of our beloved foster cat, Tricia and I:

Another pleasant valley sunday
Charcoal burnin everywhere
Rows of houses that are all the same
And no one seems to care…..

After Kate’s joint, I started to crave ice cream (this is not a surprise, really.) and ended up heading over there with Jacquelyn but not before getting my daily photos taken:

Vegan Combat boots;Vintage velvet jacket;vintage school girl skirt from Stache; Vintage David Bowie tshirt & hat from Beacons closet.

After Lula’s Sweet Apothecary we decide to go shopping a bit and buy a few earrings and stop at one of my favorite shops for beauty needs: Sustainable NYC.

Banana & Peanut Brittle Vegan Ice Cream with coconut whip cream & a cherry..:)

Sustainable NYC is the best Eco-friendly store in the city and carries anything from beauty needs to gifts to household needs and clothing. The Cafe located in the back of the shop is Ciao for Now and carries many vegan foods items and I can always guarantee on a delicious treat while I shop for hours in Sustainable. I tend to hang out here a bit because many of my friends usually work at this shop and it’s just, chill. Picking up a lip gloss and playing with everything had to end as I had to carry on with my night out.Later on, I ended up at the Brooklyn museum where I listened to music and my friend and I made it a point to lose ourselves in art. I love museums just for this reason as I have been known to turn off my phone and lead myself through museums for hours on end. Life is art and I shall bathe in it! 🙂

So, let’s skip the ever pleasant sunday…

And I will let us stroll on over to current times and my outfit for today:

Vintage striped dress. Red Bow.

Today, the sun is shining and I am feeling at peace. Though, I am sure you guessed the word for today? It seems as though I pick a word daily and stick with it. Also, you must notice and realize that The Monkees happen to be one of my favorite bands as the first time I saw them live in concert I was 3 years old and in the front row tossing a beach ball on stage and having Peter and Davey & Micky kick the ball back to me throughout the show. I later met Micky (or more recently) at an event and explained this story to him in full detail to his surprise, which then his reply was “that must have been…quite a long time ago.”  Just another memory that will never be forgotten: beach balls & The Monkees and Day Dream Believer…this is my life. 🙂

Stripes.

A style in which I will never deny being placed into my closet, I have to wear stripes just based on the fact that two of my fashion icons are Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, two people who apparently helped make stripes fashionable in the 60’s. If it’s nautical and or Striped: I very well may have it in my closet or can’t deny the need to buy it. I’d paint my room in stripes if I could (not really) but now I just think I may refurbish a piece of furniture in a nautical theme ..and this is how I get inspired.

Edie ❤

I am positive you have seen me wearing the exact outfit that she is numerous times over. Have you ever thought of why we look up to certain people to inspire our own style and fashion? I do all the time & might have a similar taste of the 60s but I mix it with my own personal essence of now. Mod for modern. Inspire me….

Ciao and wait patiently until:

Another pleasant valley sunday
Charcoal burning everywhere
Another pleasant valley sunday
Here in status symbol land
Another pleasant valley sunday….

The word for today is pleasant.
